Learning to surf comes down to one thing: a big, floaty board. The Inertia says most beginners should look at roughly 7 ft 6 in to 9 ft, and it suggests foam for complete novices, which is why the Wavestorm Classic tops this list.

Add a leash about as long as your board (The Adventure Junkies' rule of thumb) and a wetsuit that matches your water. Thickness does the heavy lifting there: thicker suits are warmer, so check your local water temperature before you pick. Wax depends on the board, because some soft-tops skip it and others can still use it. Each card shows the drawback too, so you know what you're trading before you paddle out. Foam now, fancy board later.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you'd rather stay on flat water; the Paddleboard list covers calmer days out.

Questions people ask

What size surfboard should a beginner get?

The Inertia suggests roughly 7 ft 6 in to 9 ft for most beginners, going longer if you're taller or heavier. It suggests about 8 ft for waves with more power and 9 ft or more for long, slow waves. Kids, teens and smaller adults can go under 8 ft, and it says to ask a surfer you know or a local surf shop before buying a board 7 ft or shorter.

How long should a surf leash be?

The Adventure Junkies' rule of thumb is a leash equal to or slightly longer than your board. Unless you're an expert, it says not to go shorter than your board.

Do foam surfboards need wax?

It depends on the board. The Inertia calls the ISLE Coronado's soft top no-wax-necessary, but says even a foamie can benefit from a bit of wax, and The Adventure Junkies lists a wax made for soft boards. If you're waxing, it says to start with a basecoat and add a topcoat for your water temperature.
