A dull knife squashes tomatoes and makes every recipe feel like a chore. Good news: keeping knives sharp is cheap and quick.

Hone with a rod first, and sharpen when honing stops helping. The sharpeners and honing rods here won America's Test Kitchen and Food Network tests, from a pocket-size pull-through to a full controlled-angle setup. Then get your knives out of the junk drawer: ATK's top magnetic strip and knife blocks keep edges from banging around, and a blade guard protects any knife that has to live in a drawer. Each card shows the drawback the testers called out. Start with a sharpener and a honing rod, and add storage once you love your knives.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you still need the knife itself; the First Kitchen list has reviewed chef's knives and cutting boards.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between honing and sharpening?

America's Test Kitchen calls honing the first line of defense against a dull blade. Once the honing rod stops making the blade feel keener, it's time to pull out a sharpener.

Is an electric or manual knife sharpener better?

Both work. America's Test Kitchen says its electric winner sharpens much faster than a manual sharpener but requires electricity and is about the size of a loaf pan, while its manual winner is small enough to toss in a drawer. Manual sharpeners can't repair deep damage such as chips in the blade.

Is a whetstone worth it?

It can be. America's Test Kitchen calls a whetstone a great way to sharpen at home, but there's a learning curve and it takes a lot of practice, so start on a cheap knife you don't care about. A pull-through sharpener is the easier place to start.
