Babylist says most bed rails are recommended for ages two to five, and to stop using one after five. Gaps between the rail and mattress should be no more than three inches, and the rail should cover about three-quarters of the bed's length.
The sleep consultant Babylist spoke with recommends waiting until a child is at least three before moving from a crib to a toddler bed. Teach them to get in and out without climbing over the rail.
