Packing lunch for work only sticks if the gear doesn't fight you. Serious Eats shook bento boxes full of water, microwaved spaghetti in them and painted them with sauce, then left lunch bags full of ice on a table for a full eight-hour workday.

Its food thermoses had to keep boiling soup above 140°F, and Food Network's value pick held soup there for six hours. Reviewed's adult lunch bag rounds out the budget end, and Serious Eats' reusable bags replace the plastic baggies. Start with a bento box and a lunch bag. Add a thermos if your office microwave line is a whole situation. Each card shows the drawback the testers called out, like lids that take real effort to open.

Questions people ask

Can you microwave a stainless steel bento box?

Usually not, but the Bentgo MicroSteel is the exception: Serious Eats found it microwave-safe and durable. Most other metal boxes it reviewed, like the S'well and Black+Blum, aren't, so plastic boxes like the Buluker or Takenaka make more sense if you reheat leftovers every day.

How long does a food thermos keep soup hot?

In Serious Eats' test, the Simple Modern Provision and Thermos Stainless King kept soup above 140°F for five hours, and Food Network's Mira kept it there for six. Serious Eats found narrow, taller jars held heat best, and that none of the thermoses kept cold egg salad below 40°F for more than two hours.

Will a lunch bag keep food cold all workday?

Fuller bags do best. In Serious Eats' eight-hour test, the Bentgo Insulated Lunch Bag lost only six ounces of ice, while big cooler-style bags struggled to keep a small amount of ice frozen; Serious Eats says they work better when fuller. Pack it full or add an ice pack.
