New Year's Eve fireworks are coming, and some dogs spend the night shaking under the bed. Dogster's vet-reviewed fireworks guide says to set up a quiet safe space, close the curtains, play music and keep them busy, and a few pieces of gear help.

An anxiety vest wraps your dog in steady, gentle pressure; Dogster's top pick is the ThunderShirt Classic. A donut-style calming bed gives them edges to curl into. Pheromone collars copy the scent nursing mother dogs give off, and ear muffs take the edge off the booms. Picks come from Dogster's guides to anxiety vests, calming beds and calming collars, plus Hepper's dog ear muff guide. Each card shows the drawback the outlet called out. For severe noise fear, Dogster says a vet may prescribe medication.
Who this is not for. Skip this if your dog panics so badly they hurt themselves or try to escape; talk to your vet about a behavior plan or medication first.

Questions people ask
How can you calm a dog during fireworks?
Plan ahead. Dogster's vet-reviewed guide suggests a long play session and potty break before the show, closed curtains with the lights on, music to cover the noise, a quiet safe room or crate with their bed and toys, and a peanut butter-filled KONG to keep them busy. Make sure their ID is up to date in case they bolt.
Do anxiety vests actually work?
They can help, if your dog is used to the vest. Dogster's fireworks guide says the constant, gentle pressure works much like a weighted blanket does for people. Its vest guide warns the feel of the vest and the noisy Velcro can stress an anxious dog, so introduce it calmly with treats well before the big night.
Can a dog wear ear muffs for the first time on New Year's Eve?
Better not. Dogster recommends introducing earmuffs slowly, at least a few weeks ahead, because a brand-new thing on their head during the fireworks can add to the fear.
