Questions people ask
What goes on a bed first, the topper or the protector?
HGTV says toppers simply rest on top of the mattress and most are held in place by your fitted sheet, and that a protector works on its own or in combination with a topper. Put the topper on the mattress, the protector over both, then the fitted sheet. Check that your sheets' pockets are deep enough for the extra height.
What's the difference between a mattress topper, pad and protector?
Per HGTV, a topper is mostly about comfort and is usually at least an inch or two tall, a pad adds only a thin layer of padding, and a protector adds no comfort but guards against spills, dust and bedbugs.
How thick should a mattress topper be?
HGTV's testers liked 3 inches: the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme is 3 inches and still easy to get a fitted sheet over, and they found the 4-inch Best Price topper a little too high, so they suggest the 3-inch version. If your mattress is already tall, HGTV says a 2- to 3-inch topper is the safer bet.
