Questions people ask
What should I pack for the first day of preschool?
The Bump's list: a backpack, lunch and snacks, a drink, a spill-proof water bottle your child can open alone, an extra outfit with socks and underwear, a resealable bag for dirty clothes, diapers and wipes if needed, seasonal outerwear, nap time gear, a comfort item and sunscreen. It says to tell the school ahead of time about any daily medication or allergies, and that the school will likely give you its own checklist too.
Does my child need a nap mat?
Ask first. The Bump says some classrooms have cots while others ask parents to send a nap mat, sheet and blanket. If the school provides a padded cot, it says you don't necessarily need a thick mat on top, just something that attaches securely and washes well.
What makes a backpack safe for a little kid?
The Bump points to features the American Academy of Pediatrics calls out: wide, adjustable shoulder straps, a padded back and a chest strap where you can find one. It also suggests keeping the name label inside the bag so your child's name isn't on display to strangers, and sticking to initials on a monogram.
How do I label everything?
The Bump says to label everything with your child's name. No outlet here reviews name labels, so we didn't pick one. Some picks help out: the Urban Infant mat has a sewn-in name tag and the Wake In Cloud has a clear name-card pocket.
