If your room feels clammy, your towels never dry and the basement has that smell, the air is probably holding too much water.

Start with a cheap humidity monitor: Bob Vila says indoor humidity should ideally sit between 30 and 50 percent, so you'll know right away if you need help. For a bedroom or bathroom, a small dehumidifier keeps things comfortable. Bigger rooms and basements need a compressor model, and one with a drain hose or pump saves you from emptying a bucket every day. Every pick here comes from Bob Vila's published tests of dehumidifiers and hygrometers. One heads-up for chilly spaces: regular compressor models work best when it's warm, so cold rooms call for a desiccant model. Each card shows the drawback the testers called out.

Who this is not for. Skip this if your air is too dry, not too damp; the Cozy Winter list has the humidifiers.

Questions people ask

What humidity should my home be?

Bob Vila says indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent is widely considered ideal. Above 50 percent can feel sticky, and below 30 percent a dehumidifier adds little.

What size dehumidifier is right for a room?

Bob Vila's rule of thumb: in a space at 65 to 70 percent humidity, plan on 10 pints a day for the first 500 square feet plus 4 pints for each extra 500, so about 18 pints a day for 1,500 square feet. In wetter spaces, go a little bigger, and when in doubt, size up.

Does a dehumidifier work in a cold basement?

Compressor (refrigerant) models work best above 65°F, and Bob Vila warns they can freeze up below 60°F. For cold spaces it suggests a desiccant model like the Eva-Dry EDV-4000H, which worked down to 34°F.
