Good tea at home needs just two things: hot water at the right temperature and a way to steep loose leaves. Black and herbal teas want boiling water, so any kettle works. Green, white and oolong taste better a little cooler, which is where a variable-temperature kettle earns its price. A basket infuser is the easiest way into loose-leaf tea. A matcha whisk set, a gaiwan, a thermos and a frother for lattes are the nice-to-haves. Every pick comes from Serious Eats' tea gear and kettle reviews, with budget, mid and splurge options.
Who this is not for. Skip this if you only drink tea bags; any kettle and a mug will do.

A kettle and an infuser. A basket infuser that sits in your mug is the easiest. Add a variable-temperature kettle if you drink a lot of green, white or oolong tea.
Do different teas need different water temperatures?
Yes. Serious Eats' guide puts black and herbal teas near boiling, oolong around 190°F to 200°F, and green and white tea around 150°F to 180°F. Too-hot water can make green tea bitter.
What do I need to make matcha at home?
Matcha powder, a bamboo whisk and a bowl to whisk in. Whisk briskly in hot (not boiling) water until smooth. A milk frother turns it into a latte.
