This list is built for youth players, and a first season needs less than the bat wall suggests.

Start with a glove that fits your position and your hand: Bat Digest says to put position fit before brand loyalty, and for younger players it says closing the glove matters more than owning the stiffest leather in the dugout. Next comes the bat, and here the stamp is the whole game. Bat Digest warns that the wrong one can make a great bat unusable, so check your league's rules before you buy. The bats here are USA-stamped youth picks. Add molded cleats (the two here are men's models, so they're for older players who fit men's sizes), then batting gloves and a bat pack if you want them. Each card shows the drawback too. Helmets aren't listed, so ask your league what it requires and provides.

Who this is not for. Skip this if your league plays with BBCOR bats; the bats here are USA-stamped youth picks, so check the stamp your league needs first.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between USA, USSSA and BBCOR bats?

Bat Digest says USA bats are the usual answer for Little League, Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth and PONY, USSSA bats are common in travel ball, and BBCOR is the high school and college standard. Check your league's rules before buying.

What size glove does a beginner need?

It depends on position. Bat Digest suggests 11.25 to 11.5 in for middle infield, 11.75 to 12 in for third base, 12.5 to 12.75 in for outfield and 11.5 to 12 in for pitchers. For youth players, it looks for smaller hand openings and a faster break-in.

What drop should a young hitter start with?

Bat Digest calls drop 10 the default for most 9U to 11U players. It starts 8U to 10U players at drop 12 and moves stronger 11U to 12U hitters to drop 8 if they aren't late against game pitching.
