Your room doesn't need a makeover, it needs the big light off. Start with the cheapest fix: warm 2700K bulbs, which Reviewed and Bob Vila both point to for a cozy glow.

Then add a floor lamp, because one good lamp in the corner changes the whole mood. Reviewed's torchiere can light a full room, while its pharmacy lamp is for reading. Smart lamps from Govee are for color and vibes, and a small bedside lamp handles the last hour of the night. Want to dim the lamps you already own? Tom's Guide likes Lutron's plug. Each card shows the drawback, so you'll know which lamps wobble and which bulbs get fussy on a dimmer.

Questions people ask

What color bulb makes a room feel cozy?

Warm white, around 2700K. Reviewed recommends it for a cozy atmosphere, and Bob Vila says 2700K gives a cozy glow without feeling harsh. Bob Vila says 5000K daylight bulbs can be jarring at bedtime, so save those for bathrooms and closets.

How much light does a room need?

Reviewed says a small bedroom or office (about 10 x 10 feet) is well lit by roughly 1,500 to 3,000 lumens total, and a larger living room may need 3,000 to 5,000, often from more than one lamp. About 800 lumens matches a 60W incandescent, which is enough for reading.

Why does my LED bulb flicker on a dimmer?

Popular Science says an incompatible dimmer is a common cause of flicker, buzz or a bulb that won't dim below about halfway. Check the bulb maker's compatibility list rather than trusting the word dimmable on the box, and replace older dimmers with LED-compatible ones.
