Questions people ask
Can a baby wear a snowsuit in a car seat?
No. The Bump, citing the American Academy of Pediatrics, says bulky coats and snowsuits shouldn't be worn under a car seat harness, because the padding can compress in a crash and leave extra space under the straps. Dress baby in thin, snug layers, buckle up, then add a blanket or coat over the harness straps if needed.
Are car seat covers safe?
The Bump says the AAP warns against covers that go underneath baby or add a layer between baby's body and the harness. It also says covers should have easy openings or mesh for airflow. The covers on this list stretch over the outside of the seat. The Bump also says to leave the front flaps open while riding in the car, since infants can overheat.
How do I dress a baby for winter?
The Bump says the AAP recommends several thin layers for outdoor play, added or removed as needed. Indoors, the general advice in The Bump's winter baby guide is one more layer than you're wearing. Outside, pediatrician Amiirah Aujnarain recommends keeping baby's hands, feet and head covered.
Can my baby sleep in a hat or mittens?
No. The Bump says the AAP advises against putting baby to bed with blankets, quilts, comforters, hats, mittens or bulky clothing, because they can increase the risk of suffocation. Pediatrician Gary Kirkilas tells The Bump a full-length onesie is advisable, with a sleep sack, swaddle or wearable blanket as options if you're worried about the cold.
