You don't need to rewire anything to get a smart home. Smart plugs turn any lamp, fan or coffee maker into something you can schedule or control by voice, and smart bulbs screw into the lamps you already have. Both work in a dorm or rental and come with you when you move. A smart speaker or display is the nice-to-have that ties it together with voice control. Pick plugs and bulbs that work with the assistant you already use. Every pick won a named spot in Engadget's published guides, with budget, mid and splurge options, and each card shows the drawback Engadget called out.
Who this is not for. Skip this if your building already has smart switches; the bulbs and plugs are for regular lamps and outlets.

Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Smart LED Bulb
Best for going all in on smart lights
Engadget's best smart bulb overall: wide compatibility, an easy app, and a system you can grow room by room. Start on Bluetooth, add the Hue hub later.
Yes. Smart plugs and bulbs need no wiring or tools: plug them in or screw them in, connect them to Wi-Fi, and take them with you when you move. Check your dorm's rules on extra electronics first.
Do smart plugs and bulbs need a hub?
Most don't. Kasa and LIFX connect straight to Wi-Fi. Philips Hue works over Bluetooth for a few bulbs and needs its hub for more lights and features like away-from-home control.
What does Matter mean on a smart plug?
Matter is a shared standard, so a Matter device works with Alexa, Google, Apple Home and SmartThings. It's handy if your household mixes iPhones and Android phones.
