Long day at class, longer shift at work, and your pet is home alone wondering where you went.

Pet tech won't replace you, but it helps. Start with a camera so you can peek in and talk back; Catster's top pick, the Eufy 2K, pans the whole room. An automatic feeder keeps dinner on time when you're running late. A filtered fountain keeps water moving, which Catster says nudges cats to drink more. If your dog is an escape artist, a GPS tracker is the backup plan; TechGearLab and Reviewed both put Tractive first. Picks come from Catster's camera, feeder and fountain guides, TechGearLab's GPS collar review and Reviewed's tracker roundup. Each card shows the drawback the outlet called out, from noisy feeders to monthly plans.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you just brought home a new pet and still need the basics; the New Cat and New Puppy lists cover litter, crates, bowls and leashes first.

Questions people ask

Do GPS pet trackers need a subscription?

Most do. Reviewed explains that once your dog leaves home Wi-Fi or Bluetooth range, a tracker needs a cellular plan, and that fee covers the data. An Apple AirTag has no fee but isn't GPS; Reviewed calls it only a cheap backup that depends on nearby devices.

Can an automatic feeder handle wet food?

Usually not. Catster notes that, like many automatic feeders, several models in its guide only work with dry kibble, including its camera pick. Its best value pick, the Cat Mate C3000, can hold wet and dry food at the same time.

Why get a water fountain instead of a bowl?

Moving water. Catster says cats don't have a high thirst drive and often won't drink enough from standing water, while a bubbling fountain encourages them to drink more. Plan on replacing filters regularly.
