A tiny room still needs somewhere to sit that isn't your bed. The trick is seats that do a second job.

A storage ottoman from This Old House's picks holds your blankets, rests your feet and seats a friend. A bean bag from Reviewed's list gives you a real lounge spot, and floor chairs from BestReviews fold away when you want the floor back. If you have people over a lot, HGTV's small-space futon is a sofa, a bed and a side table in one, and a pair of folding chairs can live in the closet until dinner. Measure first, and measure the futon lying flat too. Each card shows the drawback, so you'll know which ones are too small for tall people.

Who this is not for. Skip this if your only problem is one overnight guest; the Guest Room Ready list covers beds and hosting.

Questions people ask

Should I get a bean bag with beads or foam?

Reviewed says beads are lighter and cheaper but compress over time, so the chair eventually goes flat or needs a refill. Foam is heavier and usually more expensive but holds its shape longer.

How do I know if a futon will fit?

HGTV says to measure your room for the futon lying flat, not just upright, since flat it's often the size of a twin or full mattress. If you'll sleep on it a lot, HGTV says to pick a thicker mattress and a frame that's easy to switch.

Can a storage ottoman really be a seat?

Check the load first. In This Old House's picks, the YOUDENOVA lists 350 lb and the HomePop 250 lb. Bob Vila lists one bedroom bench ottoman at just 50 lb, so look at the listing before you sit.
