Your first woodworking project doesn't need a garage full of power tools. Cut, glue, clamp, sand: that's most of it.

A hand saw handles the cutting (the Japanese pull saw is the precise one, the panel saws are the fast ones), wood glue does the joining, and clamps hold everything tight while it dries. A random orbital sander turns rough boards into something you'd actually show people, and chisels come in once you start cleaning up joints. Every pick here comes from Bob Vila's tool guides, most of them published tests. Safety glasses aren't optional: sawdust in your eye ends the fun fast. Each card shows the drawback Bob Vila called out, so you know what you're trading for the price.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you just need to hang shelves and build flat-pack furniture; the First Tool Kit list has the drill, level and basics for that.

Questions people ask

What should I build first?

Something small and flat: a cutting board, a simple box or a wall shelf. You'll practice cutting straight, gluing, clamping and sanding without needing a big workspace.

Pull saw or regular hand saw?

A Japanese pull saw cuts on the pull stroke with a thin blade, so it's precise; Bob Vila's tester said it felt different from Western saws but wasn't hard to adjust to. A panel saw like the Craftsman or DeWalt cuts faster for rough work.

Which wood glue should I use?

A PVA wood glue like Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Glue Max or Gorilla Wood Glue. Both are waterproof or outdoor-ready once cured, but plan on about a day before you stress the joint.
