paddleboard starter kit

Paddleboarding is the easiest way to feel like you're walking on water, and an inflatable board means you don't need a roof rack or a garage.

The board is the big buy, so start there: OutdoorGearLab reviewed boards for stability and ease of use, and all three picks here come with a paddle and pump. A life jacket is non-negotiable, since outside swim and surf zones U.S. Coast Guard rules can require one for each person on board. Once you're hooked, a lighter paddle makes long sessions way less tiring, and a dry bag keeps your phone and snacks safe when you fall in (you will, and it's fine). Every pick comes from OutdoorGearLab's paddling tests, and each card shows the drawback its testers called out.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you'd rather sit than stand; the Kayaking Starter Kit has packable kayaks and kayak paddles.

Questions people ask

What do I need to start paddleboarding?

A board, a paddle and a life jacket are the essentials, and the three boards here come with a paddle and pump. A lighter paddle and a dry bag are nice to have. If you'd rather sit, our Kayaking Starter Kit is a better fit.

Do I need a life jacket on a paddle board?

Yes. OutdoorGearLab notes that outside swim and surf zones a paddle board has to follow U.S. Coast Guard rules, which may include a Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person on board and a signaling device like a whistle. Kids under 13 must wear one at all times. Check local rules too.

Should I use a leash?

OutdoorGearLab says a coiled leash is generally best on flat water because it won't drag. On rivers with any current, it advises against a leash, since leashes have contributed to drownings there. Note the Bote Wulf Aero doesn't include one.
