Food Network's budget pick is a solid start. Tiny kitchen? The KitchenAid Artisan Mini is both Food Network's best compact and America's Test Kitchen's best small mixer. Food Network's best overall is the KitchenAid Artisan, while ATK picks the Classic as its best mid-priced mixer and the Ankarsrum as its winner for serious bread. Don't rush the attachments. NBC Select names KitchenAid's Flex Edge Beater its best overall accessory, and ATK likes the food grinder and pasta roller but gave the ice cream bowl a hard pass. Add a scale and a good spatula, because those do half the work. Each card shows the drawback the outlet called out, like a mixer that walks across the counter or a bowl with no handle.
Who this is not for. Skip this if you mostly need pans and tins; the Cake Baking Starter list covers those.

Food Network's best compact and America's Test Kitchen's best small mixer: it aced nearly every ATK test, and ATK says it's lighter and more compact than other KitchenAid models.
Heads up. Can't fit double batches of dough, and it rocked on tacky brioche at top speed
NBC Select's best overall KitchenAid accessory: its silicone lining helps work in food stuck to the bowl, and NBC lists it as a time-saver on cleaning.
Recommended by America's Test Kitchen: the cutters ran up to 4 minutes faster than the Marcato manual machine, and you can feed dough and catch pasta with one hand.
Heads up. Sheets sometimes went through sideways, the speed tore gluten-free dough, and it costs more than double ATK's favorite manual pasta maker

Questions people ask
Does bowl size matter?
Only if you bake big. America's Test Kitchen says the Artisan Mini could not fit double batches of dough, while its best mid-priced mixer, the KitchenAid Classic, handled a double batch of pizza dough. ATK also measured how much each bowl really holds, and it's often less than the number on the box: the 4.5-quart Classic held 3.25 quarts.
Which KitchenAid attachments are worth it?
America's Test Kitchen highly recommends the food grinder and recommends the pasta roller and cutter set. It does not recommend the ice cream maker attachment or the pasta press. NBC Select names the KitchenAid Flex Edge Beater its best overall accessory. ATK's attachment review is from 2020, so check the current model on the listing.
Why do mixers move on the counter?
Heavy dough is the usual culprit. Food Network saw the KitchenAid Artisan jump on the counter with heavier breads at higher speeds, and America's Test Kitchen saw its Hamilton Beach mixer walk across the counter while kneading. Food Network says the heavy base of its big-batch pick stayed steady at high speeds.
