Adulting comes with a lot of paper: tax forms, a lease, pay stubs, your passport, and a pile of envelopes you keep meaning to open.

January is a good time to sort it once. Shred what you don't need, lock up what you can't replace, and label the rest so you can find it next year. Bob Vila ran the shredders, fire safes and fireproof bags through published trials (yes, including a propane heater) and picked the label makers. TechGearLab spent months scanning documents, receipts and photos to find the scanners worth buying if you want to go paperless. A small crosscut shredder and a fire-resistant box cover most people; the rest is up to how much paper you've got. Each card shows the drawback the outlet called out, like a shredder that needs a 15-minute break.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you want a nicer desk, not a tidier paper pile; the Desk Upgrade list is the one you want.

Questions people ask

What kind of shredder do I need?

Bob Vila says strip-cut shredders give the least security, crosscut is medium and microcut is higher because the pieces are smaller. It suggests microcut for sensitive paperwork like contracts and medical records, while crosscut is usually cheaper and faster. A higher P-number on the box means a more secure shredder.

What should go in a fireproof safe?

Bob Vila lists identity documents like passports, birth certificate copies and Social Security cards, plus insurance policies and financial and medical documents. It also says no safe is 100 percent fireproof, and to look for a safe that says "UL listed."

Is a fireproof document bag enough?

Bob Vila calls these bags more fire-resistant than fireproof: none of them are designed to withstand actual flames, and most are meant to be kept inside a safe. It also warns they can trap moisture, so papers may get musty.

Do I need a scanner, or is my phone fine?

For occasional scans, TechGearLab says a scanning app is likely your best option and is more than enough for submitting a bit of personal paperwork. It found Scanner Pro and Adobe the most useful apps. A dedicated scanner makes sense when you want to digitize a big stack.
