  • Backyard splurge Ooni Koda 2 Pro Gas-Powered Pizza Oven Best for pizzeria-style pies at home

The biggest upgrade for homemade pizza is a pizza steel. It stores heat and blasts the bottom of the crust, so a regular oven makes crisp, spotted pies instead of pale, floppy ones. A peel slides the pizza on and off, and a sharp wheel slices it cleanly. An outdoor pizza oven is the nice-to-have: it hits far higher temperatures and cooks a pie in a couple of minutes. Every pick won a named spot in Serious Eats' published tests, with budget, mid and splurge options, and each card shows the drawback the tester called out.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you only reheat frozen pizza; a sheet pan does that fine.

Questions people ask

Pizza steel or pizza stone?

Steel heats the crust faster and won't crack, so it makes crispier pizza in a home oven. Stones are cheaper and lighter. Serious Eats' reviews found steels made far better pies than a plain oven.

Do I need an outdoor pizza oven?

No. A pizza steel in a hot home oven makes great pizza. An outdoor oven gets much hotter, cooks a pie in a couple of minutes and makes Neapolitan-style pizza possible.

Wood or metal pizza peel?

Wood is better for launching raw pizza because dough sticks to it less. Thin metal peels are better for turning and retrieving pizzas, especially in an outdoor oven.
