Pumping is a whole second job, so the gear should make it easier, not louder or leakier. Start with one good double electric pump: lactation consultant Allison Tolman, IBCLC, tells The Bump that traditional electric pumps tend to be the most reliable way to collect a solid amount of milk.

Add a hands-free pump if you need to move around, a cheap hand pump for backup, a bra that holds the flanges for you and bags for the freezer stash. Every pick comes from The Bump's guides, and nursing moms used the pumps in their day-to-day routines. The Bump lists several of the electric picks as free with insurance through pump suppliers, so check your plan before you pay. Each card shows the drawback The Bump called out, from extra parts to wash to bras that run bulky.

Questions people ask

When should I buy a breast pump?

Lactation consultant Francie Webb, IBCLC, tells The Bump that most people won't need a traditional electric pump until their baby is 3 to 4 or even 6 weeks old, and if feeding is going well, she'd rather you wait so your body doesn't get the memo to make too much milk. Ask your own lactation consultant or doctor what fits your situation.

Is a wearable pump enough on its own?

Maybe not. Lactation consultant Mindy Cockeram, IBCLC, tells The Bump that some women can use a wearable as their main pump, but for most, milk removal isn't nearly as efficient as with a stationary pump. That's why this list starts with a double electric pump and treats hands-free as the add-on.

Is stronger suction better?

Not automatically. Allison Tolman, IBCLC, tells The Bump that past a point more suction isn't better, and cycle speed, suction pattern and programming matter too. She says the right flange size increases comfort and efficiency and reduces the risk of tissue damage, so check the flange sizes on each card.
