Buffering in your bedroom is not a personality. Start with the router: RTINGS buys its own routers and tests them all on the same standardized setup, and its picks can replace the one your internet company gave you.

Small apartment? One good router is usually enough. Bigger place, thick walls or more than one floor? A mesh system spreads several nodes around so the whole home gets one strong network; RTINGS picked those too. If it's just one dead room, a cheap plug-in extender from Engadget's list can fill the gap. And if Wi-Fi won't reach the far room at all, a powerline adapter from Tom's Guide sends internet through your electrical wiring instead. You only need one of these fixes, not all four. Each card shows the drawback the reviewers called out.

Who this is not for. Skip this if your Wi-Fi is fine and you just want smart plugs, bulbs and speakers; the Smart Home Starter Kit covers those.

Questions people ask

Router, mesh or extender: which do you need?

In an apartment or small home, a better router is usually enough; RTINGS says its budget pick suits most apartments and small to medium homes. For a big or multi-level home, go mesh. Engadget says extenders are great for hard-to-reach areas, but a mesh system is the better long-term fix for a whole home.

How many mesh nodes do you need?

RTINGS says to start with a two-pack in a smaller home or apartment and add a third node if you still have weak spots; a large home might need three from the start.

What's a powerline adapter?

A pair of plugs that sends internet through the electrical wiring in your walls. Tom's Guide says it's the better choice when a far room shares wiring with your router but the Wi-Fi signal can't reach it, and it's worth trying before paying for a mesh system.
