Just got an EV? A Level 2 charger at home is the real glow-up: plug in at night, wake up full.

First check your setup: EV Pulse notes you need a 240-volt outlet, and a hardwired charger means calling an electrician. Smart chargers add an app for schedules and cost tracking; basic ones just charge, and some show it all on a screen. Chargers with a J1772 plug, like the Emporia and EVIQO, need an adapter for a Tesla, so Tesla drivers can grab a Tesla-ready pick instead. A portable Level 2 cord is the road-trip move: no install if the outlet's already there. The home chargers come from EV Pulse's published tests, the portable ones from Gear Patrol's guide, and the Tesla Wall Connector from The Drive. Each card shows the drawback the reviewers called out.

Questions people ask

Do you need an electrician to install a home EV charger?

EV Pulse says a Level 2 charger needs a 240-volt outlet, and for a hardwired one it says to contact an electrician. Plug-in versions like the EVIQO and the 40 A Emporia use a NEMA 14-50 outlet.

Do these chargers work with a Tesla?

The Emporia and EVIQO use a J1772 plug, and Gear Patrol notes Tesla owners need an adapter for J1772 chargers. The Lectron Portable Tesla Charger and the Tesla Wall Connector plug straight in.

Is a portable EV charger worth it?

Gear Patrol says portable chargers lack some features of high-end wall units, but they cost less and need no installation if you already have the outlet. The ShockFlo handles both Level 1 and Level 2 charging.
