Heat on, air dry, skin crunchy. A humidifier fixes that, but only if it fits your room and you actually keep it clean.

Start with a cheap humidity monitor so you know whether you even need one, then pick by room: a cool-mist model for a bedroom, a warm-mist or big-tank one for a living room, or an evaporative model if you don't want to buy distilled water. TechGearLab and Reviewed measured how much moisture these put out and how long a tank lasts, and Bob Vila picked the hygrometers. Most ultrasonic models need distilled water or demineralization tablets, or they spit white mineral dust onto your desk. Each card shows the drawback the reviewers called out, so you know about the noise or the power draw before it's on your nightstand.

Who this is not for. Skip this if your air is damp and sticky, not dry; the Dehumidifier Starter list is the one you want.

Questions people ask

What humidity should my room be?

Bob Vila says indoor humidity should ideally be kept between 30 and 50 percent. A cheap hygrometer tells you where you are before you buy anything.

Does a humidifier need distilled water?

For most ultrasonic models, yes: TechGearLab says they need distilled water or demineralization tablets so they don't release mineral dust, and Reviewed says distilled water prevents the white dust. Evaporative models like the Blueair use a wick that keeps minerals out of the air, so they skip that step.

How often does a humidifier need cleaning?

TechGearLab says once or twice a week with regular use, and many makers suggest a weekly deep clean with vinegar and water. Reviewed adds a long-necked brush for buildup and an old toothbrush around the base.
