Freezing bedroom, drafty basement, an office that never gets the heat: a space heater fixes the one room you actually use.

A small ceramic heater is the easy start, and an oil-filled or panel radiator is the quiet, steady option for bigger rooms. Bathrooms need a heater built for them, and a wall-mount or fireplace heater frees up the floor. Every heater here comes from Bob Vila's published tests of electric and energy-efficient space heaters, and the smoke and CO alarms come from its smoke detector tests. The safety part is short but serious: plug the heater straight into the wall (Bob Vila says never use an extension cord), keep it about 3 feet from anything that can burn, and don't sleep with it running. Each card shows the drawback the testers called out.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you'd rather warm yourself than the room; the Cozy Winter list has heated blankets, throws and slippers.

Questions people ask

Can you plug a space heater into an extension cord?

No. Bob Vila says extension cords should not be used with space heaters because they increase fire risk, and it says never to run power cords under carpets, where damage can go unnoticed. Plug the heater straight into a wall outlet.

Where should a space heater go?

Bob Vila says to put it on a level, hard, nonflammable surface out of busy areas so it isn't easily tipped over, and to keep at least 3 feet between the heater and fabric, furniture, bedding or curtains. Check the owner's manual in case the maker asks for a bigger gap.

Is it safe to leave a space heater on overnight?

Bob Vila's guides advise against it: one says no space heater should generally be left on overnight, and the other says it's not a good idea to sleep with an electric heater on, even with automatic shutoff. Tip-over protection turns a heater off if it falls or gets knocked over, and overheat protection turns it off if it gets too hot inside.
