Pump for lessSchwinn Air Center PlusBest for mountain and hybrid tires on a budget
One tool for everythingLezyne Super V 22Best for one tool that covers nearly every bolt
Quiet chainSmoove Universal Chain LubeBest for fewer re-lubes and a quiet drivetrain
Most bike-shop visits start with stuff you can handle yourself: soft tires, a squeaky chain, a loose bolt or a flat. A pump keeps your tires at the right pressure, a multi-tool tightens just about everything, and chain lube keeps the drivetrain quiet. Tire levers and a patch kit mean a flat is a quick fix instead of a new tube. A repair stand is the nice-to-have that holds the bike at a comfy height while you work. The pumps, multi-tools and stands come from OutdoorGearLab's published tests, and the lubes, levers and patch kit are Cycling Weekly picks, with budget, mid and splurge options. Each card shows the drawback testers found, so you know what you're trading off.
Who this is not for. Skip this if you still need a helmet, lights and a lock to ride safely; start with the Bike Commuter Kit instead.

Best bike pump
budget pick · Floor pump
Schwinn Air Center Plus
Best for mountain and hybrid tires on a budget
OutdoorGearLab's best budget floor pump: by far the best value pump in its test, with massive air displacement that fills mountain bike tires fast and a surprisingly stable base.
Heads up. High-pressure road tires are hard work and the gauge reads low, so OutdoorGearLab doesn't recommend it for road bikes

mid pick · Electric
CYCPLUS Electric Pump
Best for hands-free top-offs at home and on the go
OutdoorGearLab's best electric pump: set the pressure, attach it to the valve and it tops off the tire for you, and it doubles as an emergency inflator in the car.
Heads up. The small screw-on adapters don't store on the pump, and battery life is the main worry
OutdoorGearLab's best bang for your buck multi-tool: a classic folding design with hex keys, Torx bits, screwdrivers, a chain tool and spoke wrenches that testers found durable and comfortable.
Heads up. Relatively heavy, and the carry case adds weight you don't need
OutdoorGearLab's best overall bike multi-tool: a simple, low-profile layout packed with hex, Torx and screwdriver bits plus spoke wrenches, a rotor truing tool and a chain tool.
Best for home wrenching that needs a torque wrench
OutdoorGearLab's Top Pick as a mobile workshop: a mini ratchet set with labeled, magnetized bits and a torque attachment that suits complex repairs and home maintenance.
Heads up. Spendy and bulky, with many small bits to keep track of
Cycling Weekly's best overall chain lube: a wax-based drip lube that kept the test chain running smoothly and noise-free after 150 miles in varied conditions, including rain.
Heads up. Needs a deep chain clean before the first application
Cycling Weekly's best overall puncture repair kit: the classic glued kit with rubber solution and sandpaper, which patched holes with no problems in reviews.
OutdoorGearLab's best overall bike work stand: the utility of a heavy fixed stand that still sets up in seconds, folds small and works well with heavy bikes.

Questions people ask
What do I need to maintain a bike at home?
A pump, a multi-tool, chain lube, tire levers and a patch kit cover most everyday jobs. A repair stand is optional, but it makes cleaning and adjusting the bike a lot easier.
Should I use wet or dry chain lube?
Cycling Weekly's rule of thumb: wet lube for tough, rainy conditions and dry lube for warm, dusty days. How often you clean your chain matters too, and wax-based lubes like Smoove need a deep-cleaned chain first.
Do I need a bike repair stand?
Not to start. OutdoorGearLab found that even the budget Bike Hand stand handles basic maintenance and repairs, and most people can get by with a simple stand rather than a pro-level one.
