first apartment safety kit

Nobody gets excited about buying a fire extinguisher, but your first place deserves a tiny safety kit before the throw pillows.

Start with a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm (battery-powered, so no landlord or wiring needed), then a fire extinguisher for the kitchen and a first aid kit for the cuts that come with learning to cook. A door security bar or a portable door lock adds peace of mind without drilling a single hole, and motion night lights save your shins on 3 a.m. bathroom trips. Every pick comes from Bob Vila's published tests, Popular Science, OutdoorGearLab's first aid kit tests and Bustle. Each card shows the drawback too, so you know what you're getting before you buy.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you're furnishing a whole first place; the first apartment checklist covers the kitchen, bathroom and cleaning basics too.

Questions people ask

What safety stuff do I need for my first apartment?

A working smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm (a combo unit covers both), a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and a basic first aid kit. A door security bar and motion night lights are nice extras.

My apartment already has smoke detectors. Do I still need one?

Press the test button on every alarm on move-in day. If one stays silent or there's no carbon monoxide alarm, a battery-powered combo alarm goes up in minutes with no wiring, and you can tell your landlord about the dead one.

Can I use a door security bar in a rental?

Usually, yes. Bob Vila flagged its horizontal and floor-mounted picks as needing permanent hardware, so we left those out. The bars here brace between the door and the floor, and the Sabre wedge and DoorJammer need nothing installed.
