mechanical keyboard starter kit

Once you type on a mechanical keyboard, the flat laptop keys never feel the same. The keyboard is the only true essential, so pick the size first: a tiny 60% board saves space but drops the arrow keys, while 75% and full-size boards keep them.

RTINGS says to think about switch feel too, since linear, tactile and clicky switches all sound and feel different. Hot-swappable boards let you change switches later without soldering. Then make it yours: a fresh set of PBT keycaps changes the whole look and feel, a wrist rest takes pressure off long typing sessions, and a desk mat ties the setup together. The keyboards come from RTINGS, the keycaps from GamesRadar+, the wrist rests from BestReviews and the desk mats from Popular Science. Each card shows the drawback its outlet called out.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you want a keyboard mainly for competitive gaming; the Gaming Setup list has gaming keyboards, mice and headsets.

Questions people ask

What size mechanical keyboard should I get?

It depends on the keys you use. RTINGS notes full-size boards have a numpad, while compact ones can drop the numpad, navigation cluster, arrow keys and function row. Its cheap pick, the 60% Royal Kludge RK61, is tiny but has no dedicated arrow keys.

What does hot-swappable mean?

You can pull the switches out and put new ones in without soldering. RTINGS points out it also makes it easier to replace a broken switch, which helps a keyboard last longer. All three keyboards here have hot-swappable switches.

Are PBT keycaps worth it?

GamesRadar+ says PBT is a thicker, more durable plastic than the ABS keycaps on many budget keyboards, and a new set can completely change how your board looks and feels. Its pick, the Epomaker Glintrix set, had the deepest feel of the five sets it reviewed.
