Short on desk? Tom's Guide calls the tiny Edifier M60 its best overall, and the Creative Pebble Pro its budget pick. Got a shelf or a dresser? SoundGuys and TechRadar like powered bookshelf pairs, which plug straight into the wall with no separate amp. Want rumble for movies and games? A 2.1 set adds a subwoofer, though your neighbors may have notes. A streamer or a smart speaker is the optional extra. These picks come from Tom's Guide, TechRadar, SoundGuys, PC Gamer and What Hi-Fi?. Each card shows the drawback its outlet called out, so nothing catches you off guard.
Who this is not for. Skip this if you want sound you can carry outside; Headphones and Earbuds has portable Bluetooth speakers, and Record Player Setup covers turntables.

Tom's Guide's best desk speakers overall: compact and sleek, they sound way bigger than they look, with meaty bass that doesn't drown out the mids or highs.
Heads up. No remote, gimmicky app functionality, and not as room-filling as larger desktop speakers
PC Gamer's top pick pairs these monitors with the optional CR8SBT subwoofer, sold separately. It says the monitors on their own are a fine choice, with a tone dial that goes from flat to fun.
Heads up. Tight bass rather than room rumble unless you add the pricey separate sub, and the control puck feels a little cheap
Limited evidence. No outlet has named this one yet. It is here as a reasonable option, not a reviewed one.
Best for adding Wi-Fi streaming to speakers with inputs
What Hi-Fi?'s best budget music streamer: a tiny, award-winning box with AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Spotify, Tidal and Qobuz Connect, plus a great control app.
Heads up. Plasticky build, and it could conceivably sound more muscular

Questions people ask
Powered or passive speakers for a bedroom?
SoundGuys explains that powered speakers plug into the wall with the amp built in, so setup is simple, while passive speakers need speaker wire and a separate receiver or amplifier. Every pair on this list has its amp built in, so there's nothing extra to buy.
Do I need a subwoofer?
Not always. TechRadar says the Fluance Ai41's bass is so deep it almost didn't miss a sub, and PC Gamer says the Mackie CR3.5BT monitors work well alone, with tight bass rather than room rumble. If you want that rumble for movies and games, a 2.1 set like the Logitech Z407 includes a sub.
Where should bookshelf speakers go?
Despite the name, SoundGuys says they work on top of your desk or on speaker stands. Leave some space behind them if they have a rear bass port, and check the size before you buy: TechRadar says the Fluance Ai41 takes up a fair bit of desk.
