Meal prep is mostly about having enough room and enough containers. A big cutting board and a sheet pan let you chop and roast a whole week's worth at once, a multicooker turns out soups, beans and shredded chicken while you do something else, and good glass containers keep it all fresh and reheat without warping. A lunch bag gets it to work. A rice cooker, slow cooker, food processor and salad spinner are optional upgrades. Nearly every pick won or placed in America's Test Kitchen's published reviews, with budget, mid and splurge options where it named them. The apartment kitchen list covers the basics.

Questions people ask

What do I need to start meal prepping?

A set of good containers, a large cutting board, a sheet pan and a decent knife cover most of it. A multicooker or slow cooker makes batch cooking easier, and a lunch bag gets meals to work or school.

Glass or plastic meal prep containers?

Glass reheats without staining or warping and doesn't hold smells as much, but it's heavier. Plastic is lighter for carrying. Many people keep glass at home and a couple of plastic ones for travel.

How long does meal-prepped food last in the fridge?

Most cooked meals keep about three to four days in the fridge. Freeze portions you won't eat by then and label them with the date.
