Your car doesn't need to be new to feel new. If it already has wired CarPlay or Android Auto, a small plug-in adapter cuts the cable so your phone connects on its own when you get in.

A dash cam is the other big one: it records the road (and with a dual model, what's behind you) in case something happens. Add a phone mount that charges wirelessly and a car charger with fast USB-C, and the dash is basically done. The dash cams, mounts and chargers come from TechGearLab's tests, the CarPlay adapter from Engadget's review, and the Android Auto adapter from Auto Express's group test. One catch: these adapters only work in cars that already support wired CarPlay or Android Auto. Each card shows the drawback the reviewers called out.

Questions people ask

Will a wireless CarPlay adapter work in any car?

No. Engadget notes that Ottocast adapters need a car with factory wired CarPlay, and in Auto Express's group test some adapters handle only CarPlay or only Android Auto, so check which one you need. Its top Android Auto pick, the Ottocast A2Air Pro, doesn't work with BMWs.

Does a wireless CarPlay adapter charge your phone?

Not the CarlinKit 5.0: Engadget's reviewer found the phone doesn't charge while it's connected and added a wireless charging vent mount. A charging mount like the Anker 613 MagGo or iOttie Auto Sense 2 solves that.

Is a front and rear dash cam worth it?

A front camera covers the basics, and TechGearLab's best bang for the buck, the Miofive S1, is front only unless you buy the rear add-on. Its pick for most people, the Rove R2-4K Dual, records both directions and includes a memory card.
