Hammock camping means no rocks under your back, no sloped tent sites and a gentle sway to fall asleep to.

Start with the hammock: OutdoorGearLab's budget pick comes with tree straps, and two of the picks here have a bug net built in, which you'll want in mosquito season. If rain is in the forecast, an all-in-one kit adds a tarp and suspension, so you're not shopping for pieces separately. CleverHiker reviewed the kits, OutdoorGearLab reviewed the hammocks, and the sleeping bags, headlamp and lantern come from Switchback Travel, OutdoorGearLab and Wirecutter. Each card shows the drawback the testers called out, so you know what you're trading off.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you'd rather sleep on the ground; the Camping list has tents, sleeping pads and stoves.

Questions people ask

What do I need for hammock camping?

A hammock, tree straps, a sleeping bag and a headlamp are the essentials. Add a bug net in mosquito season and a rain tarp if there's any chance of rain. The all-in-one kits here include a tarp and suspension.

Do hammocks come with tree straps?

Some do and some don't. The Wise Owl Outfitters Kit and the onewind Aerie Double include tree straps, and the Hennessy, ENO JungleLink and Kammok kits include suspension. Check the listing before you go.

Is a hammock better than a tent?

It depends on where you camp. A hammock skips rocky or sloped ground but needs two sturdy trees. If you'd rather sleep on the ground, our Camping list has tents and sleeping pads.
