  • Budget jacket Eddie Bauer CirrusLite Hooded Best for layering on cool days and packing small
  • Warm hands The North Face Montana Ski Gloves Best for cold hands on a budget
  • Wet, snowy days Muck Boot Arctic Ice Tall AGAT Best for wet, snowy winters

Staying warm outside is mostly about covering the basics well, and you don't have to splurge on all of them. Every pick here comes from OutdoorGearLab's published tests: an insulated jacket, gloves and mittens, winter boots, a base layer and a beanie, with a budget option for each. Think in layers: a base layer next to your skin, a jacket over it, then hands, head and feet covered. One honest note: the budget jacket is light and packable but not warm enough alone for the coldest days, so wear it over something warm. Each card shows the drawback OutdoorGearLab found next to the pros, so you know the trade before you buy. Heading to the slopes? The ski trip list adds goggles and a helmet.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you're heading to the slopes: the ski trip packing list adds goggles, a helmet and ski socks.

Questions people ask

What should I wear for cold-weather outdoor activities?

Layer up: a base layer against your skin, an insulated jacket over it, then gloves or mittens, a beanie and warm waterproof boots.

Gloves or mittens for the cold?

Mittens are warmer but you lose dexterity. In OutdoorGearLab's tests the Montana mitts were very warm but not dexterous, while the Montana gloves traded a little warmth for more finger control.

Is a lightweight down jacket warm enough for winter?

Not on its own for the coldest days. OutdoorGearLab says the CirrusLite is not a standalone winter jacket, so wear it over a base layer and add another layer or two.
