  • Cheap glow-up Quntis Monitor Light Bar with Remote Best for night owls who want desk light without lighting the whole room
  • Neck saver Lamicall Laptop Stand Best for a sturdy stand that still travels
  • One-cable desk UGreen Revodok Pro 109 USB-C Hub Best for one-cable hookup to a 4K monitor, Ethernet and SD cards

Already have a desk and a screen? This is the glow-up list, not the start-from-zero one. The biggest wins are small: a monitor light bar lights your desk without glare on the screen, a desk mat makes the whole surface feel finished, and a laptop stand gets your screen closer to eye level so your neck stops complaining. After that, a monitor arm frees up space and a USB-C hub turns one laptop port into HDMI, USB-A and more. Every pick comes from Tom's Guide, Engadget, TechRadar or Popular Science, with a budget, mid and splurge option where we could find one, and each card shows the drawback the reviewers called out.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you're building a work-from-home setup from zero (chair, desk, monitor); the Home Office Setup list covers that.

Questions people ask

What's the best first upgrade for a desk setup?

A monitor light bar or a laptop stand. A light bar lights your desk without glare on the screen, and a stand raises your laptop screen closer to eye level. Both are small and quick to set up.

Do I need a USB-C hub or a docking station?

Engadget notes there's no set standard for the difference, but docks tend to have more ports, their own power adapter and a higher price. If you just need HDMI and a few USB ports, a hub is usually enough.

Can I use a monitor light bar with a webcam on top?

It depends on the model. Engadget found the original BenQ ScreenBar takes the spot where a webcam would go, while Tom's Guide notes the ScreenBar Halo 2 includes a webcam mount that attaches to the top of the bar.
