Biking to class or work needs three things before anything else: a helmet that actually protects your head, lights so drivers see you, and a lock good enough that thieves move on to the next bike. The helmets here come from Virginia Tech and IIHS crash reviews, which recommends 4 or 5 stars. The lights won awards in Cycling Weekly's test, and the locks are NBC Select picks reviewed on a New York City commute. A heavy chain lock is the nice-to-have for overnight parking. Lock the frame first, then the front wheel, to a rack that's bolted down.
Who this is not for. Skip this if you only ride on weekend trails; the camping and hiking lists fit better.

A helmet, front and rear lights, and a solid lock. After that, a way to carry your stuff (a backpack works) and a rain jacket cover most commutes.
How do I pick a safe bike helmet?
Look it up in Virginia Tech's helmet lab results, which test how well helmets lower concussion risk. The lab recommends 4 or 5 stars. Make sure it fits snugly and sits level, just above your eyebrows.
What's the best way to lock a bike?
Use a U-lock or heavy chain through the frame and a bolted-down rack, then secure the front wheel with a cable. Park in busy, well-lit spots and take lights and accessories with you.
Do I need bike lights during the day?
They help. Bright rear lights with a daytime flash mode make you noticeably easier for drivers to spot, especially at dawn, dusk and in bad weather.
