Heated gear is basically a battery-powered hug for the coldest days: waiting for the bus, walking the dog, cheering at a freezing game.

Start with your hands and core. Bob Vila reviewed 15 pairs of heated gloves, including a freezer test and an hour with hands in a bowl of ice, and its picks run from cheap fingerless gloves to leather ones that stay warm for about 7 hours. Its heated vest test ran every vest on high until the battery died, and its best overall is a wind-blocking Ororo. Outdoor Life reviewed heated socks head-to-head, one sock on each foot. Bob Vila's top heated jacket and rechargeable hand warmers round it out. Each card shows the drawback the testers called out, like fleece that doesn't block wind.

Who this is not for. Skip this if you just need a good warm coat, hat and gloves; the Cold Weather Gear list covers the no-battery basics.

Questions people ask

How long do heated gloves and vests stay warm?

It depends on the heat setting. In Bob Vila's tests, the Ororo vests run up to 10 hours on low, the Savior gloves up to about 7 hours, and the budget YongGfte gloves nearly 4 hours on low but only about an hour on high.

Are heated glove liners worth it?

If you already own good gloves, yes. Bob Vila calls the Snow Deer liners ideal for an extra boost on especially cold days. They aren't moisture-resistant, so wear them under a waterproof outer glove in snow.

Do heated vests come with a battery?

All three Ororo vests here include one, per Bob Vila. Its testers noted the battery pocket can sit against your hip or rub your side, and the heated pockets can get warm enough to bother a phone.
