Some people just fix things. The faucet drips, the shelf sags, the door sticks, and they show up with a bag of tools and no complaints.

This list is for them, whether they do it for a living or just because nobody else will. I skipped the starter tool kits and woodworking gear, since those have their own pages here. Instead I pulled picks from two real gift guides I read: NBC Select's best DIY gifts for the handyperson and This Old House's best gifts for a handyman. I only kept things I saw named in those guides, and I only repeat what they said about each one. One tip: if your person already owns a cordless drill, ask which battery brand they use before buying power tools. Small stuff like a magnetic wristband or a good headlamp is always safe.

Who this is not for. If they are just starting a tool collection, try the First Toolkit list; if they mostly build furniture, try Gifts for Woodworkers.

Questions people ask

What do you get a handyman who already has every tool?

Look at small things they use up or lose: a magnetic wristband, a headlamp, notebooks that survive a wet job site, or hearing protection. This Old House and NBC Select both include a few of these small items alongside the big tools.

Should I buy a power tool as a gift?

It can be a great gift, but check which battery brand they use first. NBC Select notes that the DEWALT FlexVolt battery works with 20V Max tools, so it suits someone already in that system.

Are these good for beginners too?

Several are. NBC Select suggests The Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual for new homeowners or renters, and the multitool and tape-style basics suit anyone.

When should I order so it arrives by Christmas?

USPS's recommended last send dates for December 25 in the contiguous US are December 17 for Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Retailers set their own order-by dates, so check at checkout.
