Fly fishers are picky, so I leaned on two outdoor guides that name specific products: Outdoor Life and Cast & Spear.

Everything here is for someone who already fishes, so you will not find a beginner kit with a bow on it. If you are shopping for a total newcomer, our fly fishing starter list is a better fit. Most picks are small and useful, like nippers, tippet and fly boxes, because anglers use those up or lose them. The bigger gifts are wading boots, a vest, sunglasses and rod outfits. Boots and rods are easy to get wrong, so ask for a size or line weight first, or sneak a look at what they own. One tip: a small tool plus a fly box makes a solid gift on its own.

Who this is not for. Skip this if the person has never fished; try our fly fishing starter list instead.

Questions people ask

What do you get a fly fisher who has everything?

Consumables are the safest bet, since anglers run out of tippet and lose small tools. A fly box that keeps flies dry or a line cleaning kit also works. Outdoor Life and Cast & Spear both lean on these small, practical gifts.

Should I buy a fly rod as a gift?

Only if you know their line weight and style. Cast & Spear warns that gifting a rod to an experienced angler is risky. A rod outfit suits a newer angler better.

Are wading boots a good gift?

They can be, but fit matters and sizing is hard to guess. If you are unsure of the size, a gift card to a fly shop is easier.

When should I order so it arrives by Christmas?

USPS's recommended last send dates for December 25 in the contiguous US are December 17 for Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Retailers set their own order-by dates, so check at checkout.
